Featured in ALIVE magazine

Eileen G’Sell visited my studio over the summer and wrote a beautiful and thoughtful piece on me in Issue 5 of ALIVE.  I’m honored to have been featured in this gorgeous print publication that covers arts and culture in the Midwest region of the United States.  While the crisp, clean, matte pages of the printed issue are the ideal way to experience the work from ALIVE, please take a look at the article through their website.

Works in Progress

A few vessels in progress…

The past few weeks I’ve brushed aside the practicality of making small, domestic sized potter to challenge myself with new interpretations of form and a larger scale.  This shift coincided with finishing a 5 month kitchen project and rearranging my basement studio as well as the start of the new year.  Excitement is in the air as all sorts of “new” is happening.  With these pots pictured, I’m introducing subtle shifts in asymmetry at the rims, which has grown out of the process: throwing the foundation of the work and coiling/pinching the upper.

Making teapots can be a lot of fun.  This is what I discovered after ending an unintentional teapot hiatus.  Some of my students at Krueger Pottery were curious about teapots, so I started all of these in class.  After realizing they could be more than just demonstration work, I carefully took them home to the studio and just finished them up today.  They are made from red, mid-fire clay, and are coated with a couple different types of porcelain slip.  To be fired soon…

I had the pleasure of working with the Dean of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley to create a series of five, 6x6x6″ sculptures to be awarded to distinguished alumni.  All of the compositions use cast concrete, polished brass, glazed ceramic, hardwoods and plywoods.
